Bachelor of Science
The bachelor's program in materials scienceExternal link is very versatile. In 6 semesters, contents from natural sciences (mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science), engineering (construction, mechanics, material-specific subjects such as metals, glass, ceramics, polymers) as well as competences in business administration, scientific English, communication and presentation are taught. Lecture contents are made tangible in numerous laboratory internships. A 10-week industrial internship also provides an insight into non-university activities.

Master of Science
The 4-semester master's programExternal link is located at the Otto Schott Institute for Materials Research and is supported by two faculties. The professorships at the institute are concerned with metallic materials, glass chemistry, surface and interface technology, biomaterials and composites, the mechanics of functional materials, computational materials science and bioactive glasses, and offer students a wide range of electives for specification and in-depth study. In addition to the professorships in materials science, students in Jena also benefit from the offerings of the Institute of Applied Physics (laser technology, micro- and nano-optics), the Institute of Solid State Physics (photovoltaics, superconductivity and thin-film physics) and the Institute of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry de (self-healing materials, polysaccharides). In addition, the curriculum of the master's program encourages the participation in current research projects of the chairs.
