Practical Information

Jena is located in central Germany and can be conveniently reached by train, car and via several airports.

By train

Jena is well connected to the German railway network. The two most relevant railway stations for workshop participants are:

Jena Paradies
Located close to the city centre and served by north–south connections.

Jena West
Located west of the city centre and mainly served by east–west regional connections towards Weimar and Erfurt.

Depending on your point of departure, travelling to Jena may involve a change in Erfurt, Weimar, Leipzig or Naumburg.

By plane

Jena does not have its own major commercial airport. Several airports can be used to reach Jena.

Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ)

Leipzig/Halle Airport is one of the closest major airports with international connections. Jena can be reached by train via Leipzig, Halle and/or Naumburg depending on the selected connection.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

Frankfurt Airport offers the largest number of international connections in Germany. Jena can be reached conveniently by long-distance train, generally with a change in Erfurt.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)

Berlin Brandenburg Airport provides a large number of European and international connections. Rail connections to Jena are available via Berlin, Leipzig, Halle or Erfurt depending on the selected route.

Munich Airport (MUC)

Munich Airport is another option for international travellers. Rail connections to Jena generally involve travelling via Munich Central Station and onward towards Thuringia.

Erfurt-Weimar Airport (ERF)

Erfurt-Weimar Airport is geographically the closest airport to Jena, approximately 70 km away. However, the number of regular international connections is limited.

For most international travellers, Leipzig/Halle, Frankfurt, Berlin or Munich will therefore generally provide the most convenient connections.

By car

Jena is located close to two major German motorways:

A4: Dresden – Jena – Erfurt – Frankfurt/Main

A9: Berlin – Leipzig – Nuremberg – Munich

Jena can be reached directly from the A4 via the exits Jena-Zentrum and Jena-Göschwitz. The nearby Hermsdorfer Kreuz connects the A4 with the A9.

Parking in the city centre and around the workshop venue is limited. Participants staying in central Jena are therefore encouraged to use public transport or walk.

Public Transport in Jena

Jena has an extensive local public transport network consisting of trams and buses.

Public transport is operated by Jenaer Nahverkehr and is integrated into the regional Verkehrsverbund Mittelthüringen (VMT).
